9/4/2023 0 Comments Zombieland streamcloudIt's easier to look back now and see the darker side of Eisenberg's hero characters. Part of this is simply that Eisenberg has gravitated toward more sinister roles in the decade since Zombieland, playing both fictional supervillain Lex Luthor and controversial Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. It's hard to say what exactly Wichita sees in Columbus beyond gratitude for him saving her life, and that doesn't seem like fodder for a healthy relationship. He's less a lovable dork and more a creepy loner prone to becoming fixated on whatever pretty girl happens to wander into his orbit. But 10 years later, the character no longer seems quite so sympathetic and harmless. Zombieland clearly wants viewers to connect with Columbus and his desire to find both human connection and romantic fulfillment in the zombie apocalypse. In fact, it arrived just six months after Eisenberg starred in Adventureland, another adult-oriented comedy about a lovable loser pining for love inside a dilapidated amusement park. On that note.ΔΆ7 Images Columbus Is Kinda CreepyZombieland hit at a time when Jesse Eisenberg's bread and butter was playing geeky, socially awkward and sexually frustrated teen protagonists. And Columbus was basically one wrong forum visit away from becoming a full-blown incel. Wichita and Little Rock appear to have been orphans forced to become traveling grifters to survive. For instance, what little we know about Tallahassee suggests he suffered a complete mental break after the death of his child, to the point where he possibly repressed all memory of him and fondly remembers his long-lost dog instead. Zombieland may be the story of how four lonely people find a family together, but it also happens to feature four characters so profoundly unhappy that even a zombie apocalypse is preferable to the status quo. It's Also Sadder Than You RememberAs if the violence in Zombieland wasn't enough, the movie can also be surprisingly bleak when it comes to exploring the respective pasts of its main characters. It satirizes a popular horror genre, even as it shows how well it knows its genre tropes. Play That's no doubt a big reason why Zombieland resonated as much as it did, ultimately setting a new box office record for zombie movies that remained in place until World War Z. Check out this Zombieland: Double Tap clip, "Perspective": The fact that Zombieland opts for the modern, fast-running zombie popularized by 28 Days Later and 2004's Dawn of the Dead helps in the regard. The movie doesn't back down when it comes to violence and gore, and there are some genuinely scary zombie moments in between all the gags and references to Columbus' rules of survival. At times, particularly during the opening credits, it would be easy to mistake the film for a more serious zombie drama along the lines of Dawn of the Dead or 28 Weeks Later. It's More Violent Than You RememberWhile Zombieland is praised for finding the humorous side of life in the zombie apocalypse (because apparently there is one), the movie can be surprisingly dark and violent. It may not be her most iconic performance, but we'll be darned if she doesn't play a convincing zombie. But apart from that, there's only one other character of note in the original Zombieland - Columbus' neighbor "406." And would you believe she's played by future DCEU superhero Amber Heard? Zombieland came about just as Heard was beginning to gain wider recognition for her roles in films like Pineapple Express and Never Back Down. And let's not forget that incredible Bill Murray cameo, easily one of the greatest movie shockers of the past decade. There are the four main characters - Woody Harrelson's Tallahassee, Jesse Eisenberg's Columbus, Emma Stone's Wichita and Abigail Breslin's Little Rock - and a whole bunch of extras in zombie makeup. Play There's an Amber Heard CameoZombieland has a surprisingly small cast for a zombie movie.
